Small drywall holes can often be handled with a self-adhesive repair patch, compound, a taping knife and careful sanding. This type of kit is most useful when the surrounding drywall is stable and the damaged area does not require new backing or a larger section of drywall to be replaced.

For larger openings, loose seams, failed tape, moisture damage or moving cracks, a patch kit may not be the right repair.

1. Inspect the damaged area Confirm that the surrounding drywall is stable and that no moisture or movement is present.
2. Clean and prepare the surface Remove loose paper, dust and unstable material so the patch can bond properly.
3. Apply the repair patch Center the patch over the opening and press it firmly to the prepared surface.
4. Apply and feather joint compound Cover the patch and widen each coat so the repair transitions smoothly into the wall.
5. Sand, prime and paint Allow the compound to dry, sand it smooth, prime the repair and finish with matching paint.
